Help Understanding Grief

At HUG, you’re never alone on this journey. We’re here to walk with you, offering a compassionate embrace and a community that understands.

About Us

Founded in January 2018 by Corniki Bornds, HUG is a sanctuary for families navigating the profound journey of grief. We believe that healing happens best in community, which is why we create spaces where shared experiences lead to connection, understanding, and hope.

Through our support groups and community events, HUG offers a lifeline to those in need of comfort, compassion, and a sense of belonging. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to bring people together, help them share their stories, and guide them toward healing in a nurturing and supportive environment.

At HUG, you’re never alone on this journey. We’re here to walk with you, offering a compassionate embrace and a community that understands.

Community Stories

Community Stories

“HUG has been a life-changer for me. I would have never discussed my son's death with anyone or talked about it, but HUG has helped lift me out of that dark cloud. I thank God for my grief angel, Corkniki.”

- Atsushi Scott, mother of Ahman Junio’s

"I lost two sons to gun violence, and it has been a roller coaster that has affected me mentally, physically, and emotionally. Thank God I sought help and joined HUG. This group has taught me so much about how to deal with grief. I now have tools to use, sisters to lean on, and a space where I can truly be myself. I’ve learned that it's okay not to be okay. Thank God for HUG and their incredible support team."

- Yolanda Jordan, mother of Cedric & Demetrius Jordan

"My son's life was taken from me on January 17, 2025, due to senseless gun violence. I am truly thankful for HUG and the Lord. Without them, I wouldn't be able to sit here and say that I have found peace amidst everything I’ve been through since the loss of my loved ones."

- Marketa Hunter, mother of Cornelius R. Hunter

Basketball Tournament

This basketball tournament is a tribute to BJ, the son of our founder, Corniki Bornds. BJ was tragically killed just five days before his birthday. In his memory, we come together as a community to celebrate his life and the sport he loved. This event is more than just a game, it’s a way to honor BJ’s passion for basketball and his enduring spirit. All proceeds will be donated to a scholarship program for young kids like BJ, helping to ensure his legacy continues to inspire and uplift others.

Gift Drive

Your donation to our holiday gift drive directly supports kids in our community by providing them with toys, supplies, and other essentials. Your generosity ensures that each child receives the joy and comfort they deserve during the holiday season.

Your generous donations enable us to continue providing essential services and support to families dealing with grief. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a significant impact.
